This fortification at the entrance to the Bay of Baracoa was built in the 18th century to protect the city against attacks by corsairs and pirates, and it retains the architectural characteristics of that era.
From its walls, you can see the impressive Yunque, a mountain in the form of an anvil which sailors once used as a Iandmark and that is now a symbol of the city; the Bay of Baracoa, Cuba's first port and the only way to get to Baracoa prior to the triumph of the Revolution; and a grotto next to the fortress that is popularly called the "Bañito de La Punta".
